Nail Product Allergies

Address Allergic Reactions:

If you experience any signs of allergic reactions to artificial nail products, such as redness, itching, or swelling, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional.

Nail product allergies can be caused by various ingredients commonly found in nail polish and other nail products, such as formaldehyde, toluene, methacrylate, and other acrylates.

Some people may have a sensitivity to one or more of the different chemical components that make up these nail products.

Symptoms:

Symptoms can include redness, itching, swelling, and even blistering. If you suspect an allergy to nail products, it’s best to avoid the products that trigger your symptoms and consult a dermatologist for further advice.

Nail Technicians/Clients won’t know what they are allergic to until a dermatological allergy test (acrylate specific) is conducted.

Sensitivity to the offending agent may cause allergic contact dermatitis not only around the nail area but also around areas that are commonly touched such as the eyelids, mouth and chin, and sides of the neck. Nail product allergies may also lead to nail diseases such as paronychia, onycholysis and other nail dystrophies.

Treatment for Nail Allergies:

Nail product dermatitis should clear rapidly once the product is removed unless there is a secondary infection. Corticosteroid creams with or without an antibiotic may speed up recovery. Management of dermatitis caused by nail products on other parts of the body may be treated as for any acute dermatitis/eczema; this may include treatment with topical corticosteroids and emollients.

How can you avoid this?

Changing brands is NOT the necessarily solution! The allergen is most likely to be present in the other brands as well.

Nail technicians can take several steps to prevent nail allergies in their clients, including:

• Using high-quality, MMA free products from a reputable brand like Planet Nails.

• Proper ventilation: Ensure that the salon has good ventilation to reduce exposure to fumes and dust that can cause allergic reactions.

• Educate clients: Ask clients if they have any known allergies or sensitivities to certain ingredients and advise them on how to care for their nails to prevent allergic reactions.

• Good hygiene: Maintain good hygiene practices, including regular hand washing, disinfecting tools between clients, and keeping the salon clean.

• Wear gloves: Use gloves to protect your skin from exposure to nail products especially if you have a history of allergies or sensitivities.

• Nail Products are never supposed to touch the skin.
